2005 Experimental Video: 'Ghana is not African'

Back

In the piece 'Ghana is not African' the listener is subjected to an ongoing downpour of steel string rain punctuated by random door bell-like melodies via an electrical guitar. Meanwhile, the visuals display images of Maltese folk singers (ghana) melting into each other and suddenly provide a musical addition leading the piece to its climatic end. Oral poetry survives as a living tradition in the Maltese Islands. It is still one of the main sources of popular folk entertainment. The Maltese word for orally-performed poetry is ghana, or song, which covers a wide range of poems in sung form with musical accompaniment by guitarists.
